Moving ahead with our transformation plans at St Pancras
We’re progressing our groundbreaking plans to transform our St Pancras site with a multi-purpose extension to deliver even more exhibitions, events, learning programmes, research and business support.
Through an innovative partnership with Stanhope plc and Mitsui Fudosan (SMBL Developments Ltd), we're developing the land behind our site to extend our existing building and create new spaces to expand our programmes and services.
Together with our proposal for a new home in Leeds and major updates to our Boston Spa campus, this transformation will enable us to realise our Knowledge Matters vision and inspire thousands more people every year. And, as a key addition to UK research infrastructure, it will build on our role as a hub for science and innovation in London’s Knowledge Quarter – one of the greatest knowledge clusters anywhere in the world.
The extension will include:
- new galleries and event spaces to host even more exhibitions and talks
- adaptable study spaces fit for 21st century ways of working and researching
- a custom-made learning centre to enable new learning programmes
- incubator spaces for small businesses to develop and pilot cutting-edge products
- new entrances on Ossulston Street and Midland Road, a vibrant foyer for community events, and green spaces including a community garden
- commercial space for organisations looking to make their base within the Knowledge Quarter.
With a significant investment milestone now reached to develop the site, we’ll be starting initial investigation work this year as we prepare for construction in 2026. While there may be unavoidable periods of disruption once work starts, our existing building will remain open and we don't expect services to be affected. We're looking to open the new spaces in 2032.
In the meantime, we’ll be seeking the support of visionary philanthropists and partners to bring this incredible new building to life, enabling us to fit out the new spaces with state-of-the-art facilities and programmes for culture, learning, research and business support.
